October is flying right along! We are keeping busy and learning many new things! Please look under the "MORE" drop-down tab at the top of this page to see a few photos of the awesome things going on in grade two!
We have really been enjoying our silly, fun "monster" theme in language. The kids have done a great job including describing adjectives in their writing. We are also building our reading stamina and independence as we practice reading strategies such as: cross-checking, flipping the vowel sound, and using beginning chunks as clues.
In math, we are wrapping up the first unit on patterning; however, we will continue to review increasing patterns throughout the year, as this is a tricky outcome for many students. In the next few weeks, we will work on important number concepts including equality and place value.
Most students are in a good habit of exchanging their home readers as they arrive at class each morning. Teachers do give a general reminder to all the kids to do so; but it is the child's individual responsibility to take care of this job. Please encourage your son/daughter to read for 10 to 15 minutes each evening - ideally with someone to listen to them!
Please plan to attend parent-teacher conferences this Thursday, Oct. 26. This is an important opportunity to discuss how your child has settled into grade two. If you do not send back the form requesting a time, an appointment time will be assigned to you.
Spelling words for this week:
Mrs. Abt's group: focus on short and long "i" (with silent e at the end)
dish, five, stick, knife, flip, drive, dice, give, rich, kick
Mrs. Wessner's group: focus on short and long "i" (with silent e at the end)
dish, five, stick, knife, flip, drive, dice, give, rich, kick
Looking ahead to next week - we have a busy day planned for Halloween.
At 9:00 - we will be in the gym for our school-wide October celebration assembly. All parents are welcome to attend!
At 11:30 we will enjoy our Halloween "buffet" lunch. Each student needs to bring one main lunch item (eg) sandwich - and MRS. ABT'S CLASS will be providing extra snacks such as fruits, veggies, cheese, etc.
At 12:00 we will walk to the United Church to enjoy the funny Halloween play "Monsters Under the Bed"
We will be back to school around 2:30 for a few games and crafts.
